How to Sing "Hello" By Adele

After a mini-break from singing tips videos (due to Singing Transformation launch), I'm back!! I'm so excited to be teaching you how to sing "Hello" by Adele because, well, this song ROCKS.

This video starts with a bit of straight-up singing technique to help you engage with breath, and then learn how to let your resonance hit the "bulls-eye" and deliver maximum power and volume.

And then who could forget my weird-as-hell vowel modifications?? Well, they're in there, too, my friends.

These will give you clues about how to shape and aim your sound to make singing the powerful chorus of "Hello" much, much easier.

Leave me a comment to let me know if you like to sing this song, and whether this tutorial was helpful!

Lots of love, Fel

My Love Affair with BBC Radio 1

I've always secretly wished I was British. If you were to crack open my middle school diary, one of its first sentences would read: "I am writing in an effort to sound and feel more British." Ignoring the identity crisis component, I want to cite this as definitive proof of my lifelong anglophilia.

So imagine my delight last Christmas when I received an email out of the blue from The Scott Mills Show, a national British radio program on BBC Radio 1. They had seen a few of my "How to Sing _____ by ______" YouTube video series (in which I break down lyrics from popular songs and give you alternate, more "singer-friendly" vowels) and asked me to call in and teach Chris Stark, the co-host, how to sing "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues.

To accommodate the time difference, my interview was at 6am (see haggard photo below). I was incredibly nervous, but Scott and Chris instantly put me at ease. Plus, it was interesting to experience firsthand what taping a radio show is like. If you slip up or misspeak, it's quite easy to pause, speak "off the record," and then do another take. Very low-pressure.

Six months later, this past June, I returned to the show for another segment! This time, I taught Chris Stark how to sing "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding in an effort to get an iPhone "song recognition" app to correctly identify his singing.

At the time, I forgot to post it to my website and social media, so I'm posting it here somewhat belatedly, for all interested. It's silly, tongue-in-cheek stuff, but quite fun to listen to. Below is a 12-minute excerpt that includes my portion of the show. Check it out if you're curious!

And, finally - to turn this crush into a full-blown love affair - I just found out I'll be taping another segment with Scott Mills and the gang this week. Subject matter top secret! But it involves teaching another popular song, and apparently the artist will be in the studio. Stay tuned!

Cheery-O,

3 Tips for How to Sing High Notes

My latest singing tips video is all about how to sing high notes!

In the realm of singing, high notes are one of those things that have almost mythical status - they can be intimidating, scary, and mentally very troubling for singers, which, in turn, compromises vocal technique.

But knowing how to sing properly when it's time for those "money moments" is simpler than you think (although "simple," doesn't always mean "easy"). (But don't worry -- I gotcha covered.)

In this video, I'll give you my top 3 tips for how to sing high notes like a pro, including:

  1. Why you should anticipate your high note BEFORE it comes
  2. Why breath is incredibly important for singing (but especially when it comes to high notes)
  3. How and why you should think DOWN as you go UP

Remember, high notes aren't really any more "special" or concerning than other notes. So it's important not to think of them as "separate" from the notes surrounding them. The mental side of this technique is just as important as the physical technique and prep!

For more info on developing vocal range (in general), check out some of my previous videos in my INCREASE VOCAL RANGE playlist here.

Hope this is all helpful! Please leave me a comment to let me know which tips click with you!

Love,
Fel

What is "Back Phrasing?" (Hint: It's Awesome for Song Interpretation)

Hey there, singer buds!

I'm back after a week vacation (during which I happened to get married...more on that later!).

My latest singing tips topic deconstructs one of my favorite singing tools: a technique called BACK PHRASING.

What is back phrasing? Back phrasing refers to the art of slowing down or speeding up certain lines of a song. Why would you ever want to do this? Basically, back phrasing helps to alter the emotion behind what you're saying, which can add nuance and impact to your song delivery.

In other words, it makes the audience get all tingly and be like "ooooh, that was cool!"

So how does one back phrase? Well, like most singing techniques, it's more of an art than a science! However, there are certainly guiding principles to help you.

In this video, you'll learn:

  • What back phrasing sounds like
  • An exercise for deconstructing your lyrics and figuring out where to back phrase
  • How to tell when it's appropriate to back phrase
  • Why you should back phrase sparingly!

Check it out and let me know your thoughts!

How to Talk with Confidence - Healthy Speech Habits

Ahoy there!

This video provides my top 3 tips for speaking healthily!

Unhealthy talking that strains your throat and deflates your breath is sort of the "silent killer" for singers. A lot of the time, unhealthy speaking habits can contribute to fatigued vocal cords and unhealthy singing technique in the long run.

Luckily, if you've been keeping up with my blog and videos and know how I roll as a teacher; many of the core principles of singing also apply to speaking!

In this video, learn how to talk with confidence -- producing volume that lets you talk louder without the strain. You'll learn:

(1) Where to "aim" the sound for maximum volume (hint: it's not on your throat!)
(2) A simple and crazy effective exercise to help you activate your breath (to make sure you're not holding your breath while you talk)
(3) Why posture can make or break your speaking voice - and how to fix it

Tips to improve speech for singers apply to non-singers, as well; so if you're a public speaker, or have a job where you have to talk a lot, this video is for you, too.

Check it out, try out the tips, and leave me a comment to let me know which parts of the video you found useful. Also, if you have a friend who has to speak or present a lot for their job, help a buddy out and send them a link to this post!

How to Stop "Choking in the Moment"

We've all experienced the phenomenon of rehearsing a song alone in our rooms to great success, then going to perform and....BAM! Everything goes out the window.

Today's video answers a Q from one of my students -- "How do I avoid 'choking in the moment'?" The video below contains my most effective singing and performance tips that will help you gain control over your mind, body and, ultimately, your singing voice.

The most important thing is to remember is that you DO have control over your thoughts, and ultimately, your voice. Like anything else, it just takes strategy and practice.

Let's make "choking in the moment" a thing of the past!

Please leave me a comment to let me know if you can relate to this!

P.S. In the video I mention that I'd provide links to free meditation resources. Here they are!

Hope they are helpful!

VIDEO: 1 Easy Trick for Learning How to Sing

Hi friends! My latest singing tips video is short 'n' simple and offers a really easy way that you can take your singing practice into your own hands - and make huge progress, fast.

When it comes to learning and teaching yourself how to sing, it's all about harnessing the power of VISUAL CUES and "face shapes."

Singing can be super confusing if you think of it as an infinite number of sounds and possibilities. But if, instead, you memorize (1) where you feel the sound in your face, (2) and what that shape "looks like" to you in your mind, you'll start to internalize and memorize technique MUCH MUCH FASTER!

It also gives you an excuse to watch tons of YouTube videos of singers performing - oftentimes the way their faces LOOK can give you valuable clues about their singing technique and how they're creating their singer sound.

Hope this is helpful!
