Are you frustrated with your voice? Read this.

You know what bugs me most? When singers don’t realize their full potential — not because they’re incapable, but because they don’t have the right tools.

In our online singing community there are over 90,000 singers who tweet me, email me, leave awesome comments — you name it! And I can sense the love-hate relationships they have with their voices.

They have spent years (decades, even!) spinning their wheels and not making lasting progress.

How to Sing “Silent Night” – Pop Singing vs. Musical Theater

Time for a ridiculous, holiday-themed video that explores the differences between pop singing and musical theater singing!

More specifically, I will sing “Silent Night” two different ways, all while wearing an ugly Christmas sweater.

The gist of the two approaches is:

  1. Musical theater singing features pure, open, sustained vowels and is more faithful to rhythm.
  2. Pop singing lets you have more freedom with pronunciation. Play around with diphthongs, rhythms, breathiness, and vocal fry, as these simple adjustments can instantly change the genre of the singing. If you struggle with how to sing pop, hopefully these simple approaches can help you start to reshape your sound.

This isn’t a detailed musical theater or pop singing tutorial per se, but it’s a fun ‘n’ silly video that contrasts some key approaches that can help make your singing sound more pop-py.

(Because I personally am a beginner pop singer, I would consider this pop singing for beginners. 🙂 )

How to Sing Any Song with Modified Lyrics

This video is about my favorite singing “hack” – modified lyrics! This easy singing tip will give you the most bang for your buck, even (especially) if you’re a beginner.

If you’ve watched my “How to Sing Chandelier by Sia” video, or any others in my pop song series, you know that I like to take regular English words and translate lyrics into singer-friendly vowels. Why? It can do WONDERS for your singing.

When you rewrite singing lyrics with more “open” vowels, which are easier and more resonant to sing, they become a million times easier for singers to tackle.

What’s more, it makes your singing tone less closed or pinched, and more open, rich, and resonant.

I get tons of requests to translate specific songs, which I will keep doing in future, but I also wanted to give you my guidelines so that you can do it for any song that you like to sing!

Sing Without Tension – 3 Easy Warmups

Vocal tension is the #1 culprit of strained singing, vocal fatigue, burnout, and vocal problems! These 3 warmups will help prime you for relaxed, open, free singing.

Remember: if you’re someone who experience lots bodily tension (like yours truly!), singing without tension is possible — you just have to incorporate relaxation techniques into your vocal routine.

The 3 vocal warmups in the video below are:

(1) The Teapot Hiss – eliminates lower body, ribcage, and lower back tension that can creep “up the chain” and affect your voice.

(2) The Scary Lion’s Yawn – busts jaw, tongue, neck, and throat tension, all in one!

(3) “Oh, Wow!” – a simple warmup to reinforce a relaxed jaw and open throat.

Vocal Warmup to Open Your Voice (and Give Yourself Love!)

Singer buds! Many of you have talked to me about the incredible amounts of tension you experience while singing, and I want to help!

I’ve been cooking up some cool warmups that (1) Relax you, (2) Open your voice, (3) Get you LOVING on yourself and feeling confident. 🙂

(I’ve been trying to come up with a title for these, I’m thinking “Let’s Get Singer-High”?)

Anyway, I wanted to give you a short ‘n’ sweet preview of one warmup that will get you to:

(1) Open your voice and relax your throat and larynx

(2) Lift your soft palate while relaxing your jaw

(3) Look at yourself in the mirror and think HEY I LOVE MYSELF!

And here it is!

The sung line is “I LIKE LOOKING AT YOU” and the musical pattern is 1-1-3-2-1-1.

Simple, right?

Here’s the nitty gritty:

 

(1) Look in the mirror while you do this. It will help to make sure….

(2) You keep the back of your mouth open and relaxed the whole time, kind of like you’re yawning. So you sing “I LIKE LOOKING AT YOU” more like “I LAHK LUHKING AHT YUH.”

(2) When you create these words, keep your jaw dropped and try not to move it. Stay open.

(3) Your tongue basically has two “touch points”: the back of your bottom teeth, and the back of your top teeth.

(4) Start around a middle C and go for about an octave and change. Stop if it starts to hurt.

(5) As always, breathe using your diaphragm!

(6) Really heed the words you’re saying. YOU LIKE LOOKING AT YOURSELF because DAYMN you’re sexy.

What If Your Voice is Not Perfect?

Here’s a thought… What if the qualities you believe make your voice less than, actually make it cool and interesting?

I’ve contemplated this question a ton as I venture into writing my own music. So far I’d describe my strange songs as a cross between: Grimes, Lana Del Rey, and Every Broadway Show Ever.

ANYWAY. My vocal background and training is musical theater singing, which means I’m hardwired to think: “These notes (high, low, whatever) need to come out cleanly, perfectly, and without any noticeable variation, damnit!”

And while I still love that I’m able to unify my chest, mix, and head voice cleanly (for the most part) — and I believe it is important for singers not to be held back by any technical “holes” in their voices —

The truth is: for many genres of music, embracing our imperfections, or the reasons our voices are unique, can unlock a whole world of interpretation, variation, color, emotion, and interesting style choices.

For example, I am naturally higher-voiced, meaning I was born with thinner vocal folds and at certain parts of my range my voice lacks dark undertones. It instead seems to float “on top” of notes, with an almost cutesy sound to it.

When I record my voice in my home studio, I will often adjust my face shape to develop a darker tone — I open my mouth more, drop my jaw down, and make sure I’m engaging the lower half of my face. I also stand up straight and utilize my chest resonance.

But recently I wrote a song where the character seemed…well?

Vulnerable. Feeling small. Expressing thoughts that were difficult to express.

So what did I do? I recorded a take where I thought, “Let me just embrace ME, however it comes out. Let me use this higher voice. Let it thin out where it wants to, sometimes breaking, sometimes being breathy, and maybe this will better reflect the vulnerable nature of the song.”

And the result is…

NOT perfect. 🙂 But (in my opinion) way, way more interesting!

3 Tips for How to Sing High Notes

My latest singing tips video is all about how to sing high notes!

In the realm of singing, high notes are one of those things that have almost mythical status – they can be intimidating, scary, and mentally very troubling for singers, which, in turn, compromises vocal technique.

But knowing how to sing properly when it’s time for those “money moments” is simpler than you think (although “simple,” doesn’t always mean “easy”). (But don’t worry — I gotcha covered.)

In this video, I’ll give you my top 3 tips for how to sing high notes like a pro, including:

  1. Why you should anticipate your high note BEFORE it comes
  2. Why breath is incredibly important for singing (but especially when it comes to high notes)
  3. How and why you should think DOWN as you go UP

Remember, high notes aren’t really any more “special” or concerning than other notes. So it’s important not to think of them as “separate” from the notes surrounding them. The mental side of this technique is just as important as the physical technique and prep!

3 Tips to Find Your Singing Voice

My latest singing tips video is all about how to find a singing voice that is uniquely “yours.” It offers my top 3 tips for doing so…some of which might surprise you!

1) Pay attention to the natural variation in “color” (or resonance, or tone) when you speak in the day-to-day. Become aware of all the variations that are possible, and what kind of emotional intention or context usually prompts them.

2) Start by imitating! This one might be a bit controversial, but even the seemingly most original singers had influences that turned to inspiration, that eventually led to their creating their own sound.

3) Don’t be afraid to be weird and look silly! Get rid of those blocks of what you’re “supposed” to sound like will allow you to experiment more freely, which will unlock tones you didn’t know were possible.

Does Voice Classification Matter? (VIDEO)

Singer buddies!

My latest video addresses voice classification, or voice part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and answers a common question I get from singers, which is: what’s my voice classification, and does it matter?

Basically, it doesn’t really matter. Voice classification describes the thickness of your vocal folds. Sopranos and tenors are born with thinner folds, while altos, baritones, and basses are born with thicker vocal folds. This means you are naturally predisposed to sing higher (in the case of tenors and sopranos) or lower (altos, baritones, basses), and you can usually tell which voice part you are based on the natural tone of your speaking voice.

What I want to stress in this video is that your voice classification is a starting guide. It’s like saying: “I have long legs.” It describes your body and the way you were born, but it does not determine your ultimate range or what you will be able to sing in your career as a singer. It may describe what is *easiest* for you at first — but just as someone with short legs can learn to run fast, so can someone with thick vocal folds learn to sing high.
Loads of baritones and altos can sing high, and likewise many tenors and sopranos have impressive lower ranges. So don’t get bogged down in assigning a label to yourself. Any singer can successfully grow his or her voice and learn to increase their range.

How to Sing “Black Widow” by Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora

Another week, another singing tips video!

This video breaks down “Black Widow” by Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora and recommends vowel and lyric modifications that help you place the sound for Rita Ora’s tone and styling, as well as pop out your belt singing voice.

The sung hook and “pre-chorus” of this song is belty and hefty sounding, it’s important to know where to place the sound to be able to bust tension and get the notes to flow.

Altering the lyrics with new vowels, consonants, and phrases will help your wrap your mouth around the sounds. When it comes to singing and creating a signature sound (like Rita Ora), you don’t manipulate the cord, you manipulate the resonant space in your face and mouth.
